Dr. Gus M. Garmel
Gus M. Garmel, MD, FACEP, FAAEM is a board-certified, residency-trained Emergency Physician and Adjunct Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University. He currently works as a coach, advisor, and consultant at the intersection of medicine, technology, and communication. He previously served as a Senior Emergency Physician with and Leader for The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG) at Kaiser Santa Clara, as well as a Team Leader and Oral Board Examiner/Case Writer for The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). Dr. Garmel continues to serve on numerous national committees, is a peer-reviewer for several EM academic journals, and has given international and national lectures for many medicine organizations and institutions. He continues to lecture by invitation, perform research and mentoring, and publish in peer-review journals. Dr. Garmel has authored, edited, or co-published 5 textbooks in EM, one which received the prestigious National American Medical Writers' Association (AMWA) Medical Textbook of the Year award.
His clinical focus includes acute and non-acute patient care delivery for geriatric, adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients in need of or desiring care. He is passionate about improving ED operations such as workflow, patient care delivery, and efficiency. He has served both as an attending faculty and supervising physician. His research interests center on AI/Tech to improve Patient Experience (PX), patient and staff satisfaction, communication (including civility and microaggressions), conflict resolution, performance excellence in emergency care, coaching and mentorship, career success in EM, violence against HCWs, and workplace efficiency.
A leader in medical education, Dr. Garmel co-founded and co-directed the Stanford/Kaiser EM Residency Program and served as Medical Student Clerkship Director at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has served as a national expert in Faculty Development and EM Leadership. He has held positions as Senior Editor for The Permanente Journal, contributing editor and reviewer for several EM journals, and Communication Consultant and Faculty Coach for The Permanente Medical Group. His work has been honored by every EM organization, including the Peter Rosen Award, Program Director of the Year Award, National Faculty Mentoring Award (three different national awards from AAEM/RSA, CORD, and EMRA), Teaching Award for Excellence in GME, CalACEP's Legacy Award, and several others. He was selected as an inaugural member and Distinguished Educator of the CORD Academy for Scholarship in Education in EM, and is also a Distinguished Member of Stanford's acclaimed Teaching & Mentoring Academy (TMA). Dr. Garmel is an active contributor to several AI/LLM Healthcare-related committees, and consults for EDs and the healthcare industry. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Wright State University as Chief Resident in EM.
